Melissa Courtney APRN, CNM, WHNP
Melissa has been practicing in women’s health since 1997. She started as a Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse in Lexington. She then returned to school in 2001. She graduated with a Post Master’s Certificate in Nurse Midwifery from University of Cincinnati and Master’s Degree of Nursing specializing in Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from University of Kentucky. Also, she holds a national certification in both specialties.
She truly loves what she does and feels very fortunate to have discovered the career she feels she was meant to do. She feels it is a privilege. She believes a woman should be able to work with her provider in partnership in making her healthcare decisions. She believes in the power of really listening.
Besides her career, she is happily married and a mother of three teenage children that she truly enjoys. She even enjoys how they challenge her immensely (good and bad). She spends most of her free time attending ballgames to watch one child play, one cheer, and the other dance.
Dee Polito, CNM
Dee joined WomanKind Midwives in June 2016 bringing more than 30 years of nursing experience. After working as a maternity nurse, she saw the value of continuous, family centered care during the birthing process and made the commitment to become a nurse midwife. In 1997, she graduated from Frontier Nursing University, obtaining certification as a CNM and completing a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University. She practiced in rural western Pennsylvania, introducing nurse midwifery to a community that thought midwives were illegal!
Dee believes in the power of positive thinking and feels it is vital to treat others in a way that she expects to be treated. One of her favorite quotes is from Mother Teresa which states: “We can do no great things. Only small things with great love”. Dee is honored to be a part of the WomanKind team, where women and their families are given a voice and their needs are not only heard, but valued and respected; where women have choices in not only birth but all throughout their lifespan.
When not in Lexington, Dee can be found in her cabin in the Red River Gorge of Kentucky, enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. She has various therapeutic activities including travel, reading, quilting and knitting and is active in her church. Dee considers her three children, Corinne, Allison, and Neil her biggest achievements in life.
